How do you explain the New Year to young children?

First let me remind you to begin by reminding children about birthdays and how they celebrate the passing of each year on their special day. This is very similar for the earth, as it is the one time of year that we mark the annual celebration of the planet. Explain that each year we experience the 4 seasons; winter, spring, summer and fall. During the New Year, we get the chance to restart, and experience all 4 seasons over again.

Second, explain that on New Year’s Eve, Family and friends gather and count down to the last second, celebrating this big event for the whole world. Explain that it is a happy occasion, in which people cheer and celebrate the start of a new time. Talk about how the New Year by explaining that it is a fresh start and a time to look forward to new adventures and experiences. Encourage your child to think about things they want to try or do that they look forward to.

Lastly, introduce family customs and traditions that you indulge in during this time. Explain their significance and what it means to you. For example, some families eat Collard Greens for good fortune in the new year, and some also eat black eyed peas for good will.

Remember to keep your explanation age-appropriate and interactive. Use visuals like calendars or drawings to help illustrate the concepts and be open to answering any questions they may have.
