10 EASY Preschool chores to build Independence and teach Responsibility.

Our little ones learn a lot from watching us every day. They even take on our cleaning habits. As a SAHM I can attest that this is certainly true, as my little ones assume great responsibility to keep the house clean especially before daddy gets home. At the Preschool age, they are shining with independence, and ready to do everything themselves. This can make life easier on you as well as permit you to show a little trust and esteem to your little one. Between ages 3-4 you can begin to build on the following skills with your child:

1.       Folding square towels and putting t-shirts on hangers.

2.       Watering the plants. Have fun purchasing and designing the watering pail with fun stickers.

3.       Making the bed.

4.       Using a feather duster to dust around the house. Just advise “don’t knock anything down”

5.       Spaying disinfectant Lysol on door handles and light switches. (You can also use a friendly homemade cleaning solution and transfer to a small sized spray bottle for their little hands to hold)

6.       Picking up shoes around the house and placing them in a bin.

7.       Making sure their books are vertical and straight, or otherwise horizontal and properly stacked.

8.       Setting the table for dinner. Giving each place setting a napkin and fork etc.

9.       Cleaning the table for dinner. Taking each person’s plate to the kitchen.

10. Feeding a small pet Fish or refilling the drink/snack bowl for household pets.

As a bonus, you can create an image that corresponds to each task and place it on a wall. This way your child can “read” the image and complete the task. This is especially applicable to older preschoolers. Instead of being told what to do, they can be the captain of their own ship and self-direct their chores independently.  Enjoy your new little helper!
